Boundary: a line that marks the limits of an area; a dividing line.

Like many people, I’ve struggled with what it means to have boundaries. What is a boundary? How do I create, establish, and enforce boundaries in my life?

I used to search for answers to these questions, hoping to find clear guidance on how to build healthy boundaries and why others weren’t respecting mine. Boundaries, as a theme, were one of the areas in my life where I felt completely confused. I was determined to find a solution.

Years later, I realized the answer I had been seeking had always been with me.

What is this answer, you might ask?

It’s simple—yet profound. It was me all along.

I remember listening to a podcast on boundaries, desperately hoping to uncover the missing piece. The expert’s advice seemed simple at the time but was exactly what I needed to hear: “Your boundaries start and stop with you.”

At first, I was frustrated by this. How could it be that simple? But over time, I let the idea percolate within me, and the clarity I was seeking emerged. It became clear that my boundaries are reflections of my energy state and how I show up in relationships.

We are energy beings, and everything and everyone is in relationship, constantly exchanging energy. This means the way we feel, think, and act at any given moment will either attract or repel experiences and people into our lives. If we’re confused about what we’re willing to accept, our relationships—and our boundaries—will be equally confusing.

Here’s the key: when we get clear on how we want to show up energetically in our relationships, that’s when our boundaries become clear.

It’s that simple.

But it can also be complex. We often don’t fully understand the layers within ourselves, and many times, we operate in unintentional ways. It’s important to know thyself—to become aware of the energy we’re emitting and how it influences the boundaries we create. When we’re clear about who we are and what we want, our boundaries naturally form without us needing to force them.

In essence: Be the change you want to see in the world. Be in the energetic state you want to experience within yourself and in your relationships. Your boundaries will follow suit.

Just be.
